While we are still in summer mode and enjoying our area fairs, soon it will be time to send the kids back to school. Shopping for school supplies can be costly for many families. Thankfully this weekend provides a good opportunity to save on back to school shopping with the Sales Tax Holidays in both Ohio and West Virginia.

In Ohio, the tax-free weekend kicked off at midnight today and runs through 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 6. West Virginia’s tax-free weekend also began today and will run through 11:59 p.m. this Monday, Aug. 7.

The Sales Tax Holiday in both states offers a great opportunity to not only save on back to school essentials, from supplies to instructional materials, but also offers discounts on clothing items.

In Ohio, the tax-free weekend includes clothing, footwear, school supplies and instructional material. However, there are exceptions: each item of clothing must be priced at $75 or less to qualify, and individual school supply and instructional items cannot exceed $20.

Those who prefer to shop online will also be able to take advantage of the Sales Tax Holiday. In order for your items to be tax-free, they must meet the tax-free criteria and they must be purchased during the Sales Tax Holiday time frame. In addition, the retailer must accept the order for “immediate shipping” during the Sales Tax Holiday time frame.

West Virginia residents who plan to enjoy the Sales Tax Holiday will also have an opportunity to save on many back to school essentials as well. During the tax-free weekend, the following items are exempt from the Sales and Use tax:

  • Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less
  • Certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less
  • Certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less
  • Certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less
  • Certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less
Items purchased for use in a trade or business are not exempt under the sales tax holiday.

Online purchases or purchases of eligible items made via mail, telephone, or email will also quality for the sales tax exemption if they are both paid for and accepted for immediate shipment by the retailer during the tax-free weekend time period.
